As a follow-up to the fellowship survey done in 2005, an in-depth study of former fellows was done. Again, fellows were asked to rate the quality and the impact of the fellowship programme, and to suggest improvements. Regarding the majority of the questions, the results from this study correlate with those from the first survey. This gives us some confidence to believe that these results are indeed representative of the entire base population of former fellows from the years 2001 and 2002. Full Story »
The Department of Technical Cooperation, in partnership with the Division of Public Information, has embarked on a journey to find stories, stories of the impact that nuclear technology has had in Member States. The first impact videos come from Costa Rica and Guatemala. In Costa Rica, isotope hydrology methods are used to manage water resources. The videos from Guatemala show how nuclear techniques are used to identify hypothyroidism in newborns and the importance of dosimetry for radiotherapy treatments. View Videos »
To assess the impact and the quality of the IAEA fellowship programme, the Department of Technical Cooperation conducted a survey among former fellows from the years 2001 and 2002. Approximately 30% of the former fellows participated. They rated the quality and the impact of the fellowship programme on their career, on their home institute, on the technical cooperation project and on their home country. The third meeting of the Standing Advisory Group on Technical Assistance and Cooperation (SAGTAC) concluded on 25 July 2003, with observations and recommendations to the Director General on policy and strategic issues influencing the Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). These included ways of strengthening the Country Programme Framework (CPF) process, possible options for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of TC project approval, and building partnerships with the development community.
New topics proposed for discussion at future SAGTAC meetings include linkage between the TC Strategy and the Medium Term Strategy of the Agency, Review of Thematic Planning, Programming for Regional Projects, Institutional self-reliance and sustainability.
Addressing the June Board of Governors meeting, Ana María Cetto introduced the Technical Cooperation Report for 2002, but also identified opportunities for the TC programme. In her speech, Mrs. Cetto shared ideas for increasing public awareness of project achievements and developing extrabudgetary contributions, as well as identifying the need to strengthen women's participation in nuclear science and technology.
The Europe Regional Website was presented at the Europe's Regular Annual Regional Meeting of Member States on 26 May 2003 in Vienna and is aimed at facilitating information flow and communication with the Europe Region's Member States.

TC welcomes with pride and optimism its new Deputy Director General (DDG-TC), Professor Ana María Cetto, who took up her new assignment on 2 January 2003 at the IAEA Headquarters, Vienna. A memorandum of understanding has just been signed between the Musculo-skeletal Transplant Foundation (USA)and the IAEA, represented by Deputy Director General of Technical Cooperation Jihui Qian to help strengthen educational and technical infrastructure in tissue banking.The IAEA programme on tissue banking was initiated over a decade ago, and today extends to 30 countries. Through the programme, countries have realized huge savings in tissue importation costs, surgeons in developing countries learn new grafting methods, injured patients get better health care and lives are saved. The IAEA, through the regional TC project RLA/8/031 on “Sustainable Management of Groundwater Resources”, is supporting the development and implementation of a programme that aims at solving water shortages and protecting the subterranean water resources. This project is being implemented by Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
