Partnership

The IAEA, a partner in sustainable development

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the global focal point for nuclear cooperation within the United Nations family. Its programme, dedicated to helping its Member States achieve their social and economic goals, is focused on many activities that serve basic human needs by applying nuclear science to improve health care (nutrition, cancer treatment, communicable diseases…), increase food production, improve management of water resources and assess sources of environmental pollution.

As a scientific and technical organization, the IAEA is a vital partner in development, a partner which helps developing countries to address their basic human needs through knowledge and technology transfer, provision of expertise and delivery of equipment. In order to strengthen the international support to the poorest countries, the IAEA works closely with the other United Nations agencies and with civil society at national and international levels. With the conviction that synergy is key to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the IAEA considers partnership building as a strategic activity.
