Comprehensive Energy System Planning

High energy prices caused by growing global energy demand and growing concern for the environment are causing many countries to reconsider their national energy strategies and national development goals in relation to existing energy resources, available infrastructure, trade and other supply options. Critical for many developing countries is energy planning expertise and infrastructure (such as electricity generating stations, distribution grids, hydropower dams, refineries or pipelines) which is often loaded with high up-front capital costs.

Through Comprehensive Energy System Planning, the IAEA is supporting its Member States to (a) establish national capacity in energy-environment planning, (b) develop future energy demand profiles and (c) chart out cost-optimal energy mixes and sustainable energy strategies within which the feasibility and timing of nuclear power can be assessed. Technical cooperation provides a modality for infrastructure sharing between countries in order to facilitate economies of scale, ease the individual financial burden and lower risks to any one single country.
